Storage Requirements Calculations for Video Editing

I have tried to compile a simple way to calculate Storage requirements for Audio-Video Editing Work. Please let me know your suggestions.Considerations:

Therotical Throughput

Practical Throughput

1 1 Gb Network Interface (1024 Mb/s) 128 MB/s 75 MB/s
2 Single 7200 SATA ES HDD (Large Block, Sequential Load) (Ref. http://wintelguy.com/raidperf.pl ) 43.4 – 97.8 MB/s ( 60 MB/s avg.)
3 DVCPRO50 / DV50Mb/s Single Layer(http://www.dulcesystems.com/html/video_space.html ) 6.25 MB/s 7.5 MB/s
4 DVPAL 25Mb/s Single Layer (25Mb/s) 3.125 MB/s

1 Gb/s = 1024 Mb/s = 1024 /8 = 128 MB/s = 128 x 1024 = 131072 Mb/s

Video Editing on Mac:

Format: DVCPRO50
Users: 12
Layers: 5

For Single 5 Layers DV50 Video Editing : Required Throughput = 5 x 7.5 = 37.5 MB/s

For 12 Users:

Required Throughput = 37.5 x 12 = 450 MB/s = 450 x 8 = 3600 Mb/s = 3.2 Gb/s

Video Editing Windows Machines:

Format: DVPAL
Users: 10
Layers: 4

For Single 4 Layer DVPAL Video Editing : Required Throughput = 4 x 3.125 = 12.5 MB/s

For 10 Users:

Required Throughput = 12.5 x 10 = 125 MB/s = 125 x 8 = 1000 Mb/s = 0.97 Gb/s

P2 Capturing System:

User: 1

File Size = 65 GB = 65 x 1024 = 66560 MB/s

Network Interface = 1 Gb/s = 75 MB/s

Storage Required = 4 TB = 4096 GB

To Copy 65 GB file over network using 1Gb Network interface:

66560 / 75 = 887.466 seconds = 14.79 Mins = Roundup = 15 Mins.

To write 65 GB file on SATA 7200 RPM HardDrive in 15 mins:

Required Disk Throughput = 75 MB/s

Total Throughput Calculation:

Mac Video Editing DV50 : 450 MB/s : 3.4 Gb/s

Win Video Editing DVPAL : 125 MB/s : 0.97 Gb/s

P2 Capturing System : 75 MB/s : 1 Gb/s

Total : 650 MB/s : 5.4 Gb/s

To Achieve 650 MB/s Throughput from SATA 7200 HDD in RAID6:

As per Raid Performance Calculator: http://wintelguy.com/raidperf.pl

No. of disks required: 25 HDD

However Storage will come 24 HDD Slots,

And As per above mentioned maths we will get 840 MB/s

As per above maths, Network Interface required atleast of 7.03 Gb/s, so Single 10 Gb/s Fiber port will be good enough to sustain this load.

Final Conclusion:

Our Storage should atleast have:

1 TB SATA HDD : 24 Nos. For RAID level 6

10 Gb Fiber Port : 1 Nos.
